Of all the skills I wish I had been blessed with, it might well be said that sewing would be high on the list. I can no longer rely on my dear old grandma to provide me with the never ending supply of household linens, table clothes, curtains, bathrobes, shirts etc. When I was growing up, Nan was the fount of all knowledge concerning domestic survival – she was a very quiet, in fact shy, person. Very much subserviant in her own mind. But my word she was an absolute whizz at sewing with her old treadle sewing machine. And what she didn’t know about running a house with several members of the family needing washing, ironing, feeding, bill paying etc. She was the original domestic goddess as far as my sisters and I were concerned. Knowing how to budget is a skill that seems to have been so long forgoten.
